How soon can you feel pregnancy symptomsHow Soon Can You Feel Pregnancy Symptoms

When a woman has her first pregnancy test, she often wonders how soon can pregnancy symptoms start and how early can you get pregnancy symptoms. There is no easy answer to this question because every pregnancy is different. Some women have pregnancy symptoms as soon as they miss their period. Often the first symptom is ongoing breast tenderness that doesn’t go away with the missed period. Other symptoms soon follow, and there are symptoms of pregnancy that last for the entire pregnancy.

Here are Some Questions You Might Have About the Symptoms of Pregnancy:

  • How soon do pregnancy symptoms start? Some of the more obvious symptoms of pregnancy do not start until about two weeks after the missed period. This is about six week’s gestation. Often there is heartburn along with this and breast tenderness that hadn't gone away from when the woman didn’t even know she was pregnant. The typical symptoms of nausea and vomiting can be managed by keeping a little bit of food in the stomach at all times and eating small meals throughout the day.
  • How soon can you have pregnancy symptoms with twins? Often women with twins will have stronger pregnancy symptoms because they have twice the HCG levels. This means an increase in nausea and vomiting in the first trimester as well as showing their pregnancy “bump” earlier than with singleton pregnancies. Some women experience more fatigue in twin pregnancies while others will not be aware that they are having twins until they get the confirmatory ultrasound showing two embryos or two fetuses.
  • How soon do you get pregnancy symptoms in the second trimester? The second trimester usually heralds a decrease in fatigue and less nausea and vomiting. This isn’t universally true because some women will have nausea and vomiting throughout the pregnancy. In general, however, the baby bump begins to grow, and the woman begins to feel more energized and less fatigued. In the 16th to 20th weeks, she will begin to feel the baby move, which will be a welcome sign that the pregnancy is going well, and the fetus is normally developing . Often, this is the time bonding begins to happen more clearly because she will have an ultrasound in the second trimester at around 18 weeks19 weeks gestation that will tell her if she is having a boy or a girl. Planning the nursery can start at this time.
  • How soon do pregnancy symptoms show to others? If there are a lot of symptoms or if a woman suddenly stops drinking alcohol when she was a regular drinker, she may give away her pregnancy sooner than she would like to. The good news is that nausea and vomiting generally mean that the pregnancy is moving along nicely and is a healthy pregnancy, so the worry over telling people about a pregnancy that might end in miscarriage is usually not a problem.
  • How soon do pregnancy symptoms appear in second pregnancies? Every pregnancy is different. Some women have more obvious symptoms with a second pregnancy because she knows what to expect, while others will feel fewer symptoms. It all depends on the levels of HCG in the serum (which make the symptoms occur) and on the woman’s individual response to the HCG levels.
  • How long does it take to get pregnancy symptoms that are debilitating? If a woman gets pregnancy symptoms that take her out of work, such as is the case in hyperemesis gravidarum, this usually happens at about 5 week’s gestation. Nausea and vomiting become so severe that the woman must be hospitalized to receive IV hydration and control over nausea and vomiting. Before 6 weeks, most women can hide their pregnancy quite quickly.
  • How soon do pregnancy symptoms occur in the first pregnancy? Women who don’t know what to expect, often mistake pregnancy symptoms for the flu or a stomach bug. They may feel tired but don’t know that this fatigue is related to being in early pregnancy. Women can go several weeks not suspecting they are pregnant until they realize they must have missed a period.
  • How soon do pregnancy symptoms begin to take a toll? Pregnancy symptoms tend to be tolerated by most women throughout pregnancy. Some women, especially those with hyperemesis gravidarum or who aren’t physically healthy at the time they get pregnant will have more difficulty going through daily activities while in early pregnancy.
  • How long before pregnancy symptoms go away? The pregnancy symptoms tend to change as the pregnancy advances so that, at no point in the pregnancy are you without any symptoms. Just as some symptoms disappear, you will have other symptoms, and you may feel like your body has been “hijacked” by this little person inside you.
  • How soon do you get symptoms of pregnancy if you are having a miscarriage? If you have an early miscarriage, you may have no symptoms of pregnancy whatsoever because the HCG hormone never gets very high. Some women have pregnancy symptoms right away but the symptoms disappear at around 6-7 week’s gestation, and bleeding begins sometime later than that.
  • How long does it take for pregnancy symptoms to be less uncomfortable? As mentioned, every pregnancy is different. Some women are the most uncomfortable in the first twelve weeks after which they begin to feel more normal with the exception of having a growing belly. Energy levels return and eating become easier. This is a time to enjoy being pregnant and to plan for the months ahead when the expanding belly makes things more uncomfortable again.
  • How soon do you notice pregnancy symptoms after a positive pregnancy test? It depends on when you take the test. If you take an ultra-sensitive pregnancy test that is positive before you miss your first menstrual period, you may not get symptoms for several weeks. If you wait until you miss your period before taking the test, your symptoms might start right away.
  • How soon symptoms of pregnancy can be treated? While there are medications to control nausea in pregnancy, it is probably better to treat these symptoms naturally as medications in pregnancy can later be found to be harmful in pregnancy. Try to treat as many symptoms of pregnancy as naturally as possible so that the fetus isn’t exposed to anything that might be harmful.
