What happens if you have sex on your period?
Situations vary from woman to woman, but most likely you will not be able to conceive during your period. However, there is a small chance that you can get pregnant. Some women may confuse spotting during ovulation as their period and not realize that they are fertile.
Your menstrual cycle begins with your period – meaning, the day your period arrives is day 1 of your menstrual cycle. Most women experience a menstrual cycle of 28-32 days. In essence, your period is the shedding of the endometrium, a blood-filled tissue lining the uterus. The endometrium is where the egg attaches after fertilization. If you did not conceive during your last menstrual cycle, your level hormones will decrease and your period will begin. Your period (or menstruation) maylast between three and seven days. By the third day of your period, estrogen and progesterone levels reach their lowest levels, triggering the pituitary gland to release other hormones to begin the preparation of new eggs.
Your menstrual cycle begins with your periodOn day 4, fluid-filled pockets develop on the ovaries, each carrying several eggs. During this phase of your menstrual cycle, chances of getting pregnant are almost nil. Even though sperm cells are viable up to 5-6 days, ovulation will happen at least 8-9 days after your period stops, so they won’t live long enough to fertilize the egg. Some women, often those with short cycles and long periods, may ovulate several days after their period. This increases the likelihood of pregnancy, as the sperm cells may still be viable and ready to fertilize the egg.
